El art\u00edculo aborda el aprovechamiento de residuos org\u00e1nicos mediante compostaje y analiza c\u00f3mo la composici\u00f3n de diferentes residuos influye en las propiedades fisicoqu\u00edmicas y microbiol\u00f3gicas del compost.<\/span><\/p>

La investigaci\u00f3n desarrollada desde el Programa de Ingenier\u00eda Ambiental de UNIAGRARIA alcanz\u00f3 un importante reconocimiento en el \u00e1mbito cient\u00edfico internacional con la publicaci\u00f3n del art\u00edculo \u201cEffect of Feedstock Composition on Physicochemical and Microbiological Properties of Compost from Tuber and Acidic Fruit Peel Residues\u201d, en la revista cient\u00edfica internacional ACS Omega, de la American Chemical Society (ACS). El art\u00edculo fue publicado el 7 de septiembre de 2026 y forma parte del volumen 11, n\u00famero 37 de la revista.<\/span><\/p>

El trabajo cient\u00edfico fue desarrollado en el marco de las actividades del Semillero de Investigaci\u00f3n Sostenibilidad Ambiental y Territorio, en articulaci\u00f3n con el Grupo de Investigaci\u00f3n Desarrollo Sostenible, Gesti\u00f3n del Riesgo y Cambio Clim\u00e1tico del Programa de Ingenier\u00eda Ambiental de UNIAGRARIA. La investigaci\u00f3n cont\u00f3 adem\u00e1s con la participaci\u00f3n y colaboraci\u00f3n de docentes investigadores del Department of Chemical Engineering de la Federal University of Santa Catarina, ubicada en Florian\u00f3polis, Brasil.<\/span><\/p>

La investigaci\u00f3n estudi\u00f3 el comportamiento de dos tipos de residuos org\u00e1nicos utilizados como materia prima para procesos de compostaje: residuos de c\u00e1scaras de tub\u00e9rculos, como yuca, papa y zanahoria, y residuos de c\u00e1scaras de frutas \u00e1cidas, entre ellas naranja, lim\u00f3n, pi\u00f1a y maracuy\u00e1. El estudio permiti\u00f3 identificar diferencias importantes en las trayectorias t\u00e9rmicas, fisicoqu\u00edmicas y microbiol\u00f3gicas de los procesos de compostaje, evidenciando la importancia de adaptar las estrategias de manejo de acuerdo con las caracter\u00edsticas de los residuos utilizados.<\/span><\/p>

Entre los resultados obtenidos se destaca que el compost elaborado a partir de residuos de tub\u00e9rculos alcanz\u00f3 una temperatura m\u00e1xima de 69,1 \u00b0C y una relaci\u00f3n final carbono\/nitr\u00f3geno (C\/N) de 16,18, mientras que el compost elaborado con c\u00e1scaras de frutas \u00e1cidas alcanz\u00f3 una temperatura m\u00e1xima de 57,5 \u00b0C y una relaci\u00f3n C\/N de 56,12. Estos resultados evidencian que la composici\u00f3n de la materia prima tiene una incidencia directa en el desarrollo del proceso de compostaje y en las caracter\u00edsticas finales del producto.<\/span><\/p>

El art\u00edculo tambi\u00e9n resalta la necesidad de considerar de manera complementaria la madurez fisicoqu\u00edmica y la seguridad microbiol\u00f3gica del compost, demostrando que alcanzar determinados indicadores de estabilizaci\u00f3n no necesariamente garantiza por s\u00ed solo la ausencia de microorganismos de inter\u00e9s sanitario.<\/span><\/p>

Este producto cient\u00edfico se deriv\u00f3 del proyecto misional \u201cImplementaci\u00f3n de un Laboratorio Experimental de Compostaje y Aprovechamiento de Residuos Org\u00e1nicos en UNIAGRARIA\u201d, desarrollado en 2025 bajo el c\u00f3digo PM250040. De esta manera, la publicaci\u00f3n constituye un resultado concreto de un proceso de investigaci\u00f3n orientado al aprovechamiento sostenible de residuos org\u00e1nicos y a la generaci\u00f3n de conocimiento aplicable a los desaf\u00edos ambientales actuales.<\/span><\/p>

Para UNIAGRARIA, este logro evidencia el impacto de los procesos de formaci\u00f3n investigativa, innovaci\u00f3n y gesti\u00f3n sostenible de los residuos que se desarrollan con la participaci\u00f3n de estudiantes y docentes, as\u00ed como el compromiso institucional con la generaci\u00f3n y divulgaci\u00f3n de conocimiento cient\u00edfico.<\/span><\/p>

La publicaci\u00f3n en ACS Omega fortalece adem\u00e1s la proyecci\u00f3n internacional de la investigaci\u00f3n de UNIAGRARIA y demuestra el potencial de las iniciativas desarrolladas desde sus semilleros y grupos de investigaci\u00f3n para abordar problem\u00e1ticas relacionadas con la sostenibilidad, el aprovechamiento de residuos y la protecci\u00f3n del ambiente.<\/span><\/p>

Con este resultado, UNIAGRARIA contin\u00faa consolidando una cultura de investigaci\u00f3n que conecta la formaci\u00f3n acad\u00e9mica con la generaci\u00f3n de soluciones para los territorios y con los desaf\u00edos de la sostenibilidad a nivel nacional e internacional.<\/span><\/p>
